Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Administrators can block IPv4 or IPv6 addresses and evict agents through the hub’s admin API or CLI. Both actions require an admin token.
    • Blocked addresses are refused WebSocket connections and storage requests across hubs. Evicting an agent also blocks its last-known address and removes its pending messages.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for configuring the admin token and using the new administrative commands.
  • Compatibility
    • Existing registry files continue to load with an empty blocklist.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds authenticated IP blocking and agent eviction to the WebSocket hub, with local and NATS blocklist persistence, storage and connection enforcement, and CLI commands. It also adds repository checks and updates ASCII handling and generated check documentation.

Changes: IP blocking and agent eviction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registry persistence and storage enforcement
libs/edge-toolkit/src/ws_server.rs, libs/edge-toolkit/tests/registry.rs, services/storage/src/*, services/storage/tests/blocked.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The registry persists blocked IPs and loads older registry files. Storage PUT, GET, and HEAD requests reject blocked peer addresses, including uploads blocked while the body streams.
Shared NATS blocklist and mailbox updates
services/hub-backplane/src/*, services/hub-backplane/tests/backplane.rs
The backplane stores blocked IPs in et-blocked, sends block notifications, lists valid addresses, and removes messages from a sender across mailboxes.
Hub blocklist loading and enforcement
services/ws/src/*, services/ws/tests/*, services/ws-test-server/*, services/ws-server/*
Hubs load local and shared blocks, reject blocked WebSocket upgrades, and close established blocked connections. Cluster tests cover propagation and enforcement across hubs.
Admin API authentication and operations
services/ws/src/admin.rs, services/ws/tests/admin.rs, Cargo.toml
The admin API adds bearer-token authorization and routes to block an IP or evict an agent. Eviction blocks the agent’s last-known IP and removes its queued messages.
CLI commands and API documentation
utilities/cli/*, utilities/int-gen/src/openapi.rs, utilities/int-gen/Cargo.toml, services/ws/README.md, services/ws-server/HELP.md
The CLI adds block-ip and evict-agent. The OpenAPI specification and service documentation describe the routes, token, and blocked-address responses.

Repository rules and generated checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Branch-size, exemption, and advisory policies
.mise/config.toml, config/conftest/policy/*, config/semgrep/no-suppressing-unexemptable-rules.yaml, config/semgrep/no-check-tool-mentions.yaml, config/deny.toml, AGENTS.md
New policies check branch size, prevent exemptions for no-non-ascii, require an inline guard, and reject mixed advisory expiration dates.
Ast-grep and source-rule validation
config/conftest/policy/ast_grep_rules/*, config/ast-grep/rules/no-self-call-in-default.yaml, config/ast-grep/tests/no-self-call-in-default.yaml, config/semgrep/comment-summary-line.yaml, config/semgrep-tests/*, config/jscpd-baseline.json
New checks require ast-grep rules to use error severity and flag constructor calls from Default implementations. The Rego comment-summary rule now handles metadata comments and has a fixture.
ASCII enforcement and generated output
config/ast-grep/rules/no-non-ascii.yaml, config/semgrep/no-non-ascii.yaml, config/generated-trees.toml, .mise/config.python.toml, .mise/python-rest-fstring-url.awk, utilities/int-gen/src/help.rs, utilities/int-gen/tests/help_md.rs, utilities/*/HELP.md, AGENTS.md
ASCII checks now cover generated output and previously excluded paths. Help output and generated Python client files replace specified non-ASCII characters.
Meta-rule metadata and catalogue generation
utilities/int-gen/src/checks.rs, utilities/int-gen/tests/checks.rs, CHECKS.md, config/ast-grep/rules/*, config/conftest/policy/*, config/semgrep/rego-rule-summary.yaml, utilities/int-gen/Cargo.toml
The generator identifies meta rules from YAML and Rego metadata, counts them, and marks them in the generated catalogue.

The IP-blocking and eviction feature has a window in which an evicted agent can still queue a message, and manually blocking a mapped IPv6 form can miss an IPv4 peer. Several earlier concerns remain open, including a test that does not compile without reqwest's json feature and an open relay path. Resolve or accept these before merging.

Explanation

The title "Agent removal" is partially related to the changeset. The PR adds agent eviction through an admin API (DELETE /agents/{agent_id}), and it removes an agent's queued messages. It also adds IP blocking, which is the larger part of the change. The title names a real aspect but does not name the main point, and it is broad. It does not use vague terms like "misc updates", so the check does not fail.

Major · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Restore the duplication ratchet.

declared_clones rises from 347 to 370 while the updated baseline contains 350 fingerprints. The policy now permits 20 more fingerprints before it reports growth. That reverses the policy's stated rule that the ceiling may only be lowered. Remove the newly accepted duplication and keep the ceiling at or below its previous value; do not add headroom to accommodate the expanded baseline. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the guard patterns, not the entire rule.

If the guard patterns stop matching no-non-ascii but its message still names that ID, contains(json.marshal(rule), id) passes. The policy then accepts a guard that cannot detect the suppression. Inspect the guard’s detection patterns instead, and add a test with the ID only in the message.

Match the complete suppressed rule ID.

\b also matches between no-non-ascii and the hyphen in no-non-ascii-extra. A marker for that different rule is therefore rejected as a suppression of no-non-ascii. Require an ID delimiter or the end of the marker instead, and test the near-miss ID. Based on learnings, exemption checks must match structured identifiers at their boundaries.

Detect suppression markers on the first line.

If a file starts with a suppression marker, none of these patterns match because each requires \n before the marker. The guard therefore misses a first-line marker. Add a first-line case to the detection strategy and test it. Account for a blanket nosemgrep marker suppressing a finding reported on its own line. Semgrep supports inline suppression comments. Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

One malformed blocklist key stops every hub from starting.

blocked_ips fails the whole call when any key in the et-blocked bucket is not hex-encoded UTF-8 or does not parse as an IP. start_backplane in services/ws/src/lib.rs propagates that error with ?. A hub that restarts therefore cannot join the backplane while one junk key exists in the bucket.

A key that is not an IP cannot block anything, so skipping it loses no protection. The subscribe watch already skips and logs such entries. Make the startup listing behave the same way. Keep NATS transport errors as hard errors.

Update corrupt_blocklist_keys_are_skipped_by_the_watch_and_reported_by_the_listing in services/hub-backplane/tests/backplane.rs to expect the valid IPs plus a logged skip, instead of InvalidText/Key/InvalidIp errors.

The test does not compile: reqwest::Response::json is unavailable.

The CI check / features job fails on all three platforms with "no method named json found for reqwest::Response". The reqwest dev-dependency of et-ws-test-server does not enable the json feature, so .json() at Line 39 does not exist. This blocks the clippy lane.

Read the body with .text() and parse it with serde_json. serde_json is already a regular dependency of this crate. Alternatively, enable features = ["json"] on the reqwest dev-dependency in services/ws-test-server/Cargo.toml.

Limit meta detection to package metadata.

OPA also permits # METADATA annotations on individual rules. If one rule in a non-meta policy has custom.meta: true, this scan marks the entire policy as meta. section_rules then counts every rule in that file as meta. Check the package annotation and its custom.meta field before applying the flag to all summaries. (openpolicyagent.org)

Match constructor calls with explicit generic arguments.

If default() calls Self::from_parts::<T>(value), the call's function node is a generic_function, not the required scoped_identifier. The rule misses that delegation even when from_parts calls Self::default() and causes recursion. Match both callee shapes and add an invalid fixture with explicit generic arguments. (docs.rs)

Restrict named-marker matches to suppression comments.

A prose line such as Use nosemgrep: no-non-ascii only with approval matches Line 18 because the pattern does not require a comment marker. Line 20 has the same problem for ast-grep-ignore. This can make documentation fail the Semgrep check without a suppression comment. Require comment syntax for these patterns, and add a negative test with named-marker prose. Semgrep's named suppression syntax uses a comment. (semgrep.dev)

Exclude direct tuple-variant construction.

Self::Value(0) directly constructs a tuple enum variant, but this rule reports it as constructor delegation. Valid Default implementations therefore fail ast-grep-check. (doc.rust-lang.org)

Ask the operator for permission to refine the lint, then add a valid enum fixture. As per coding guidelines, “Never weaken or disable a lint to make code pass” without explicit operator permission.

Check the blocklist on /websockify upgrades.

With the default websockify feature, relay_handler accepts any /websockify upgrade. It does not compare the peer address with the blocklist. The relay then opens a TCP connection to the hub's loopback HTTP port. The storage routes are registered in the same app, so storage sees that connection's peer as 127.0.0.1. agent_and_filename checks only the peer address, so a blocked client can send storage requests through the relay.

Reject blocked peers in relay_handler before actix_ws::handle runs. This needs the registry blocklist passed into et_websockify_service::configure, which currently accepts only the target address. The relay tests call configure(cfg, target) with two arguments, so they must be updated with the signature. Relays that are already open remain open after a client is blocked. Tracking and closing them is a separate change.

Recheck the blocklist before committing uploads.

A client can start a PUT before eviction and finish its body after eviction. Until the next WebSocket heartbeat, require_bucket_owner can still find its session connected, so the PUT can write despite the block. Recheck the blocklist after reading the body and before store.put. Coordinate the commit with eviction if writes must strictly stop when eviction succeeds. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

In the PUT handler, recheck the peer against the blocklist after reading the
request body and immediately before calling store.put, so an eviction during
body upload prevents the write. If eviction must strictly stop all writes once
it succeeds, coordinate the final check and store.put with the eviction

Preserve package metadata across a blank line.

When a valid # METADATA block has a blank line before package, this branch clears in_annotation. rego_is_meta then returns false, so the catalogue omits the policy’s (meta) marker and undercounts meta rules. OPA accepts that spacing. Preserve the parsed annotation across blank lines, and update the assertion at Line 142 of utilities/int-gen/tests/checks.rs. (openpolicyagent.org)

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Canonicalize addresses in IpBlocklist.

PUT /blocked-ips/{ip} parses any valid IpAddr and stores it without canonicalization. The WebSocket and storage handlers compare that entry with peer_addr().ip() using exact membership. A mapped IPv6 entry can therefore fail to block the corresponding IPv4 peer. The current listeners bind to 0.0.0.0, so this does not require a dual-stack listener.

Normalize addresses in from_ips, block, and is_blocked with to_canonical().

Stop sender writes before completing the eviction sweep.

forget_messages_from sweeps each mailbox once. After the sweep passes a mailbox, an evicted agent's open socket can queue another direct message before the heartbeat closes it. The admin request can then succeed while that message remains available for later delivery. Prevent new writes from the blocked sender and account for in-flight writes before completing the sweep. The local registry removal has the same timing risk. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Percent-encode agent_id before it enters the request path.

format!("/agents/{agent_id}") puts the raw id into the URL path. URL parsing gives # and ? special meaning. An id such as agent#1 therefore sends the request to /agents/agent, and the #1 suffix is dropped. An id that contains / does not match the /agents/{agent_id} route. In both cases the eviction targets the wrong resource or fails, so an operator cannot evict that agent with this command.

Agents choose their own ids. The repository search did not find a check that rejects these characters in services/ws/src/connection.rs or services/ws/src/lib.rs. Percent-encode the id as a single path segment before it is formatted into the path. Use an existing percent-encoding helper if the workspace has one. Otherwise, add one.

block_ip is not affected. IpAddr formatting does not produce /, ?, #, or %.
